Nazareth Farm…A week of Service, Prayer and Work

DSC00740From June 1-June 7, 2014, 7 Bishop Donahue students along with 2 faculty chaperones traveled to Doddridge County, WV to serve, pray, work, and celebrate community at Nazareth Farm. New graduates David Beazel, Tim Cherry, Renae Kudla, Chris Vani and Class of 2015 members Jillian Edge, Steven Gretchen, Dalton Lantz, and teachers Mr. Board and Mrs. Granato lived according to the 4 Cornerstones of Nazareth Farm: Simplicity – Prayer – Community – Service. While at the farm, the contingent from BD worked on home repairs for families in Doddridge and surrounding WV counties. These repairs enabled the community members to be safe in and proud of the places they call home. They replaced a roof, demoed and replaced a porch, installed vinyl siding, and overhauled an old shed into living space just to name a few of the work sites.  There were also schools from California, Illinois, Ohio, and Texas serving with our students, so they were blessed to meet students and chaperones from other places around our country and make new friends. Interestingly enough, Bishop Donahue is the ONLY High School from West Virginia serving at Nazareth Farm this year. There were many opportunities for student-planned and led prayer throughout the week, including 2 Eucharistic Prayer Services with amazing guitar accompaniment by our own Dalton Lantz. The students and chaperones who served at Nazareth Farm this year would like to extend sincere gratitude to all of those who supported the trip this year whether financially, through prayer, or encouragement. You were held up in prayer throughout the week. Also, a special thanks goes out to Jerry Rice at Certainteed Gypsum for donating 1 1/2 tons of drywall to the farm for future work projects and to Cheri Wilson-Long (mom of Jillian ” Irenaeus” Edge) for driving half of the drywall down to Doddridge County.

All-in-all, it was a life-changing week for all of those who were fortunate enough to go, and hopefully the 1st of many weeks spent by the Bishops in years to come living out the Marist charism of serving the least favored among us in our own Wild, Wonderful West Virginia. More information about Nazareth Farm can be found at or from any of the ” Nazareth Farmers” from Bishop Donahue.

College Courses Offered, Students Can Graduate with up to 27 credits

wvnccBeginning in the 2014-15 school year, Bishop Donahue students will have the option of enrolling in multiple college courses, allowing them to graduate with as many as 27 college credits.  West Virginia Northern Community College recently announced  that early entrance students can register for any 3 credit hour classes for just $75 per class ($25 per credit hour).  B.D.H.S. quickly collaborated with WVNCC to create a program that offers classes at Bishop Donahue and on the WVNCC Wheeling campus. The early entrance program offers Donahue families the most affordable college option available, potentially saving thousands of dollars.

By taking advantage of these classes now, students may be able to enter college as a sophomore, or have minimal  freshman classes remaining.  These classes, in the vast majority of cases, are transferable to colleges and universities in West Virginia.

Students will qualify to enroll  for college classes based on their ACT scores or by taking the COMPASS test,  which is offered by WVNCC.
