Advent Retreat at B.D.H.S. Prepares Marshall & Ohio County Grade School Students for Christmas

dsc01368Thursday, December 1 was a day of grace at Bishop Donahue High School celebrating the church season of watching, waiting, and hopeful anticipation, Advent.  24 Bishop Donahue Sophomore, Junior, and Senior students served as retreat leaders for area 7th & 8th graders from Corpus Christi, St. Michaels, St. Vincent’s, Our Lady of Peace, and All Saints. The theme for the day was Advent Preparation: Preparing Our Hearts for Jesus.

The students were challenged with powerful witnesses presented by seniors Trey Miller and Jewel Purpura, and a skit by the retreat team, as well as a thoughtful talk by Mr. Jeff Smay, followed by intense small group discussions. The youngsters also were busy and active with ice-breakers and games organized and well executed by junior Isabel Reilly.

The focus of the retreat was to recognize the presence of Jesus every day by consciously preparing our hearts to welcome Him. The retreat wrapped up with each grade crafting Advent Calendars for their various classrooms to serve as guides for the Advent Season. BDHS designated pastor, Fr. Bekeh, celebrated mass for all retreat participants and small group leaders at St. James Church capping off the day with the Eucharist confirming their commitments to prepare their hearts for Jesus.

Many thanks go out to the principals of all the grade schools for sending their students to us, to the retreat leaders who spent many hours in preparation to host our guests, to Mrs. Krupica in the Development Office for providing lunch, to Mr. Jeff Smay for his enlightening talk, Mr. Zac Harvey for all IT prep, and Mr. Jarett Kuhns for providing the music for mass.

Advent blessings…………..Hope – Peace – Joy – Love……………..Come, Lord Jesus
