On Tuesday, January 20 Bishop Donahue was excited to begin its initial project with the Clifford M. Lewis, SJ Appalachian Institute operated through Wheeling Jesuit University. 18 Freshmen and Sophomore students joined Mr. Tom Breiding from Appalachian Institute at the Fresh Air Farm in Triadelphia for some “SPRING CLEANING.” The F.A.F. is used by the Appalachian Institute to house and feed High School and College students from all over the US when they come to Wheeling for Appalachian Service Immersion experiences. As a new partner with AI, BDHS agreed to help get the F.A.F. facility ready for upcoming service trips. In return for our sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, swabbing, window-washing, and oven-cleaning, BD 9th & 10th graders have partially funded (at a GREATLY reduced rate) a SPRING BREAK Service Immersion Trip of our own. In addition to that, every student who participated that day earned 6 service hours that will count toward his or her graduation requirement of 60 service hours over 4 years. Mr. Breiding treated the students with some musical story-telling at the end of the day! (As a side-note, ask any of the students on the trip if they know what they can take beyond the “Green Glass Doors.”) Any Freshman or Sophomore interested in being on this inaugural SPRING BREAK Service Immersion can talk to Mrs. Granato about being added to the list.
